While I prefer 2016’s II a bit more than Songbird, make no mistake - this album continues Ethicist’s strong streak of emotionally-resonant blackgaze that blows away most of their more famous contemporaries. No artifice, no nonsense, and no flab, I cannot believe that Ethicist is not more well known, but this will change soon. Somehow, this is a near-perfect metal album for the post-pandemic era, even though it was released last year. Give Songbird a chance - you will not regret it.
